거화에서 동아자동차로

코란도의 활약으로 잘 나가던 거화는 경영진의 싸움이 원인이 되어 1984년 흑자 도산이라는 이상한 최후를 맞는다. 정부는 1981년 2월 28일 발표한 자동차공업 합리화조치(1)에서 혜택을 받지 못한 동아자동차로 하여금 거화를 인수할 수 있게 했다.

1955년부터 미국 트럭 엔진 등을 이용해 버스를 만들던 하동환자동차제작소가 동아자동차의 전신이다. 자동차공업 합리화조치는 현대·대우(당시 새한)가 승용차를, 기아가 소형 트럭, 동아는 특장차만 생산하도록 한 것이 주요 골자다.

86년 7월 1일 거화를 인수한 동아자동차는 86년 5월, 코란도 20대를 일본에 수출해 국산차의 첫 일본 진출이라는 새 기록을 만들었다. 그러나 거화를 인수한 것이 직접적인 원인이 되어 자금압박에 시달리던 동아는 86년 9월 30일 쌍용그룹에 회사를 넘기고 말았다.

쌍용 -  왜건형 4WD 코란도 훼미리

88년 3월 쌍용은 회사이름을 쌍용자동차공업(주)으로 바꾸고 코란도 생산설비를 3배로 늘린다. 쌍용 브랜드의 89년형부터 수동 5단 트랜스미션이 달리기 시작했다. 1988년 12월에는 X카 프로젝트로 개발된 왜건형 4WD 코란도 훼미리가 선보였다.

그리고 1988년에 쌍용자동차로 사명이 바뀌면서 쌍용 코란도가 되며, 데칼이나 앰블렘을 비롯한 자잘한 외장 부품이 변경되었다.이 당시에 파생 차종인 스테이션 웨건형 코란도 훼미리도 등장하지만, 이름과 파워트레인만 공유했을뿐 그 외에는 전혀 다른 혈통의 차종이다
